About the project

The Temples of India project is an initiative to develop and design a comprehensive repository of the pre-18th century CE temples in India. Due to the lack of research-based information and architectural documentation amidst growing urbanization, the built heritage is prone to further dilapidation and loss. Recognizing the existing gaps in documentation, the Project endeavours to develop multimedia modules offering insights into the architectural marvels that form an integral part of India's cultural and historical heritage.

Initiated in the state of Rajasthan, the project began with covering temples in 2023-24, under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), through in-depth research and documentation covering themes such as evolution, historiography, architectural styles, symbolism, etc. Collective participation of researchers, architects, scholars, domain experts, cultural professionals, community members and institutions are coming together to make this vision a reality.

The module on each of the temples consists of a combination of elements such as overview essays, allied articles, image galleries, photo essays, architectural drawings and library artefacts.
