The National Archives of India is the custodian of the records of enduring value of the Government of India. It was established on March 11, 1891, in Calcutta (now Kolkata) as the Imperial Record Department. Today, NAI stands as the largest archival repository in South Asia.
Within its extensive holdings, the institution safeguards a diverse and vast corpus of records, encompassing public records, private papers, oriental records, cartographic records and microfilms. These records collectively represent an invaluable wellspring of information, serving as an indispensable resource for scholars, administrators, and archival researchers.
